Your personal year: why the same year feels so different for each of us
In short: Your personal year is a number from 1 to 9 that sets the theme of your calendar year in numerology. You find it by adding your day and month of birth to the current year and reducing the total to one digit. A 1 year is for beginning, a 9 year for finishing, and every number between has its own job. It doesn’t predict events. It tells you what the year is shaped for, so you can put your energy where it will count.
Have you noticed how a year can be wonderful for your sister and exhausting for you, although you live an hour apart and share the same weather, the same news and the same family? I used to put it down to luck. Then I learned to calculate a personal year, and it made sense.
What is a personal year in numerology?
In numerology, every calendar year carries a number for the whole world, called the universal year, and a different one for you. Yours is your personal year. It moves through a cycle of nine years, each with its own theme, and then begins again. It turns on the first of January and stays with you until the end of December.
It doesn’t tell you what will happen. It tells you what the year is shaped for, which is far more useful when you’re deciding where to put your energy. Think of it as the season you’re in. Nobody blames a garden for being bare in January, and nobody expects it to fruit in April.
How do you calculate your personal year number?
You only need your date of birth and the year you want to look at.
Take your day of birth and your month of birth.
Add the calendar year you want to look at.
Add all the digits together, and keep adding until you have one digit.
Say you were born on 14 March and you want to know about 2026. Day: 1 + 4 = 5. Month: 3. Year: 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 10, and 1 + 0 = 1. Then 5 + 3 + 1 = 9. From January to December 2026, you’re in a personal year 9.
The same person in 2027: 5 + 3 + (2 + 0 + 2 + 7 = 11, and 1 + 1 = 2) = 10, and 1 + 0 = 1. A personal year 1. After the year of finishing comes the year of beginning, which is exactly how the cycle is meant to turn.
One exception: if your total comes to 11 or 22 before the last step, keep it in mind. These are master numbers. An 11 year is a 2 year with the volume turned up, and a 22 year is a 4 year with much bigger plans. Not every numerologist keeps them for personal years. I do, because the people living through them usually recognise the description.
What does each personal year mean?
Here is what each year asks of you, and what tends to go against the grain.
Personal year 1: beginning. Start the thing. Plant seeds, even small ones: a course, a move, a first client, a new habit. What you start this year carries you through the next eight. It isn’t a year for waiting to be asked.
Personal year 2: patience. The seeds are under the soil and nothing seems to move. This is the year of partnerships, of listening and of small adjustments. Pushing hard brings little. Being kind, patient and present brings a lot.
Personal year 3: expression. Speak, write, create, see people. Say yes to joy. The 3 is the year to be seen, to share what you started in your 1 and tended in your 2. Scattering your energy is the risk: ten projects, none finished.
Personal year 4: building. Work, structure, foundations. Less glamour, lasting results. A 4 can feel heavy, all routine and effort. It is laying the floor you’ll stand on for years, so check the paperwork, the health and the house.
Personal year 5: change. Movement, travel, the unexpected. Plans shift and doors open where you didn’t look. Stay flexible. Holding on tightly to how things were is what makes a 5 uncomfortable.
Personal year 6: home. Family, responsibility, care. The house and the people in it. Someone may need you more, or you may finally put your own home in order. Watch that care doesn’t turn into carrying everyone else.
Personal year 7: reflection. Study, rest, time alone. Go inward before the next push. A 7 rewards learning and quiet, and it rarely rewards a big launch. If the world seems to slow down around you, let it.
Personal year 8: harvest. Results, money, recognition. Step up and ask. What you built in your 4 and learned in your 7 can be valued now. It is the year to name your price and take the role that fits you.
Personal year 9: completion. Finish, sort, let go. Clear the ground for a new cycle. Old projects close, some relationships change shape, cupboards empty. Starting something big in a 9 is like planting just before the frost.
Does a personal year start in January or on your birthday?
Numerologists don’t all agree. The most common way, and the one I use, follows the calendar year: your new number begins on the first of January. Others count from one birthday to the next. In practice, the months between your birthday and the end of the year often feel like a bridge, with the old theme fading and the new one already making itself felt. If your year seems to change mood in the autumn, that may be why.
How it looks in a real life
Mine, for instance. 2025 was a personal year 1 for me, and it was exactly that: I closed one long chapter and began a completely new life. 2026 is an 11, the master number that sits on top of the 2. Patience, partnership, and a great deal of light coming in. It is the year I put my four systems together. 2027 will be a 3, the year of expression and being seen, which suits someone who has just built a website.
I didn’t plan my life around those numbers. I looked back and found they had been keeping time all along.
How to use your personal year, without letting it run your life
A number is a guide, not a rule. Here is how I suggest using it.
Look back before you look ahead. Calculate your last three or four years and ask whether the themes fit. That’s the quickest way to see whether this lens is useful for you.
Choose the timing, not the goal. Your number doesn’t decide what you want. It helps you decide when. A launch in a 1 or an 8, a course in a 7, a clear-out in a 9.
Stop fighting the season. If you pushed a new project all year and nothing moved, look at the number. A year 7 or a year 9 was never going to reward a launch.
Remember the people around you. Your sister in her 1 is bursting with plans. You in your 2 need a nap. Neither of you is doing it wrong.
Go one level further with your personal month. Add the number of the month to your personal year and reduce it. A 9 year in November (11, so 1 + 1 = 2) gives a personal month 9 + 2 = 11, then 2: a quiet, patient month inside a year of endings.
Three clocks, one year
Numerology is one way of marking the year, and each of my other systems has its own. The Chinese year that Ba Zi uses begins in early February, with a new animal and a new element. In astrology, your own year begins on or around your birthday, when the Sun returns to the place it held when you were born. Astrologers call it your solar return.
So you have three clocks: one that turns in January, one in February and one on your birthday. Your personal year gives the theme. Ba Zi and astrology add the detail: which area of life, which months, which kind of opportunity. When the three say the same thing, I pay attention. That is exactly what goes into each personal agenda, month by month.
Frequently asked questions
What is my personal year number for 2027?
Add the digits of your day and month of birth to 2 + 0 + 2 + 7, which is 11, then reduce it to 2. Add everything and reduce to one digit, keeping 11 and 22 if they appear before the last step. Someone born on 14 March, for example, is in a personal year 1 in 2027.
Is a personal year the same as a life path number?
No. Your life path number comes from your full date of birth and stays with you for life. Your personal year changes every January and describes the season you’re in. The life path is the road; the personal year is the weather on it this year.
Which personal year is best for starting something new?
A personal year 1 is made for beginnings, and an 8 is strong for anything to do with work, money and recognition. A 3 suits anything creative or public. A 7 or a 9 is better for preparing, studying and clearing the ground.
What is a personal month?
It is the rhythm inside your year. Add the number of the calendar month to your personal year and reduce it to one digit. It shows the mood of each month within the larger theme.
Can numerology predict what will happen to me?
Not the way people often hope. It describes the kind of year you’re in and what it favours. What you do with that is yours, which is why I read it alongside Human Design, astrology and Ba Zi rather than on its own.
Would you like to see your own numbers?
Your personal year is one line in a much larger picture. In a free summary reading I put your main numbers next to your Human Design, your astrology and your Ba Zi, in around 8 pages, so you can see where they agree.
If you’d like the whole story, the personal reading goes through every system with you on a call, and the personal agenda carries your years and months into a diary made for you.
