Turning sixty: what the four systems say about this threshold

I turn sixty in September 2027. Like many people, I had a moment of “already?” when I first did the sum. Then I did what I always do with a big question: I looked at my own charts. For the year leading up to it, I wrote myself a plan of what I want to learn, build and try, made from those charts and from what I still want from life. I call it my Living Curriculum, and writing it changed how I feel about the number.

In short: Turning sixty is a real threshold in all four systems. In Chinese tradition it completes the sixty-year cycle of the calendar, so the year pillar you were born under comes back, and the birthday has long been celebrated as a new beginning (花甲, hua jia). In Western astrology it follows soon after the second Saturn return, around 58 to 59, with the Chiron return around 50 already behind you. Numerology shows which personal year your sixtieth falls in, and Human Design offers something quieter: permission to decide, from now on, in the way you were built to decide.

This article is for those of you turning sixty in the next year or two, and for the families wondering how to mark it.

Why is sixty a special birthday in Chinese tradition?

The Chinese calendar counts years with two sets of signs. There are ten heavenly stems (the five elements, each in a yang and a yin form) and twelve earthly branches (the twelve animals). They turn together, one stem with one branch, and the same pair only comes round again after sixty years. This is the sexagenary cycle, 六十甲子, which begins with 甲子, Wood Rat, and ends sixty pairs later.

In Ba Zi, the first of your four pillars is the pillar of your birth year. In the year you turn sixty, that exact pillar returns. The calendar has completed one full turn of your life and is starting the next.

A few examples, for readers born in the mid-1960s:

  • Born in 1966: you were born in a Fire Horse year, 丙午, and 2026 is a Fire Horse year again.

  • Born in 1967: your year pillar is the Fire Goat, 丁未, which returns on 4 February 2027.

  • Born in 1968: your year pillar is the Earth Monkey, 戊申, which returns in 2028.

One detail matters here. The Ba Zi year doesn’t begin on 1 January or at Chinese New Year, but at the start of spring, 立春 Li Chun, around 4 February. If you were born in January or the first days of February, your year pillar belongs to the year before, and so does your return.

What does 花甲 (hua jia) mean?

花甲, hua jia, is the traditional name for this sixtieth year. 甲 is the first of the ten stems, the one that opens every cycle, and the whole phrase evokes the many-coloured pattern of stems and branches that has now been fully woven.

What I love about this view is its shape. Western culture tends to see sixty as a line on a graph that slopes downwards. The Chinese calendar sees a circle that closes and opens again. You aren’t at the end of something. You’re at the start of a second round, with everything the first one taught you.

In your own chart, this sits alongside your ten-year luck pillars (大運). These change every ten years and mark the chapters of a life, and the age at which they change is personal to each chart. Your Day Master stays the same throughout: the element you are doesn’t change, only the weather around it.

What does astrology say about turning sixty?

The Chiron return, around 50. Chiron takes about fifty years to go round the Sun, so it comes back to its birth position around your fiftieth birthday. Astrologers associate it with old wounds and with the wisdom that grows out of them. By sixty, it is ten years behind you.

The second Saturn return, around 58 to 59. Saturn takes about 29 to 30 years to go round the zodiac. The first return comes around 29. The second comes around 58 to 59, just before sixty. Saturn is the planet of structure, time and what lasts, and its return tends to ask a simple question: what in your life is truly yours, and what are you carrying out of habit or duty?

So when you blow out sixty candles, you have usually just come through that review.

The houses add the detail. Where Saturn sits in your chart shows which area of life the review touches most: home in the 4th house, vocation in the 10th, daily work in the 6th, study and travel in the 9th. Which one is yours depends on your birth date, time and place.

Which personal year will you turn sixty in?

Numerology gives each year of your life a number from 1 to 9, your personal year. To find it, add the day and month of your birth to the year you’re looking at, and reduce to a single digit.

Say you were born on 14 March 1967 and turn sixty in 2027. Add 1 + 4 (the day), 3 (the month) and 2 + 0 + 2 + 7 (the year). That makes 19, then 1 + 9 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1. Your sixtieth birthday falls in a personal year 1: a year of beginnings, fresh starts and planting seeds.

Someone born on another day will land on another number, and the meaning shifts with it:

  • A personal year 1: the threshold and the year agree. A good time to start the thing you have been putting off.

  • A personal year 5: change, movement and the unexpected. A sixtieth that wants a trip, not a quiet dinner.

  • A personal year 9: endings and clearing. The year to finish, give away and close, so that the next cycle starts light.

Keep in mind the year around you too. 2027 is a universal year 11, reduced to 2, a year of partnership and patience, and your personal year sits inside it.

What does Human Design add at sixty?

Human Design doesn’t mark sixty with a cycle. What it offers is more personal, and to me it is the most useful of the four at this age: permission.

Most of us spent decades deciding the way our work and families required. Human Design says each person has a type with its own strategy and an authority that shows how they make good decisions.

  • Generators and Manifesting Generators are built to respond, to wait for something to come to them and notice whether their whole body says yes.

  • Projectors are built to wait for recognition and invitation, rather than pushing.

  • Manifestors are built to start things and to inform the people around them before they act.

  • Reflectors are built to take their time, ideally a full lunar cycle, before a big decision.

At sixty, many people have more say over their days than ever before. That makes it the ideal moment to try deciding your way. Your open centres, where you take in other people’s energy, also become easier to see once a busy working life quietens.

One more piece of Human Design teaching fits this age. For people with a 6 in their profile, life is described in three phases, and the third, the phase of the role model, begins around fifty with the Chiron return. By sixty they are well into it.

When I think of my own sixtieth, I don’t picture a cake so much as a doorway. The last year has already been full of beginnings: a house built in 1745 to bring back to life with my youngest daughter, dogs and cats underfoot, and this readings work, which I started at an age when many people are told to slow down. My curriculum keeps me pointed somewhere. I would like the same for you.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the 60th birthday important in Chinese culture?

Because the Chinese calendar runs in cycles of sixty years, and at sixty the year pillar you were born under returns. The birthday is called 花甲 (hua jia) and has long been celebrated as the completion of one cycle and the start of a new one.

When is the second Saturn return?

Around 58 to 59, since Saturn takes about 29 to 30 years to go round the zodiac. The exact timing depends on where Saturn was when you were born, so it varies a little from person to person.

Do I need my birth time for a reading at sixty?

Your year pillar and personal year only need your birth date. The houses in astrology, your hour pillar in Ba Zi and your Human Design chart all need a birth time, and if you don’t know yours, there are ways to work around it.

Is a reading a good present for a 60th birthday?

It can be a lovely one, because it speaks to exactly the questions this birthday raises. A gift voucher lets the person choose when they want their reading, and it stays valid for twelve months.

Would you like to see what your sixtieth holds?

In a personal reading, I look at your chart in all four systems with this threshold in mind: your year pillar and your current luck pillar, your Saturn and the houses it moves through, your personal year, and your Human Design type and authority. We talk for about ninety minutes, and you receive a written reading you can return to through the whole year.
