How you’re built to decide: strategy and authority in Human Design

Think of the last big decision you got wrong. I’d guess you had made a careful list of reasons for it. Most of us were taught to decide with our heads: weigh the arguments, ask three friends, sleep badly, choose. Human Design says something that surprised me when I first read it. The mind is excellent for gathering information, and a poor place to make the final call.

In short: In Human Design, your strategy tells you how opportunities are meant to reach you, and your authority tells you whether a particular one is right for you. Your authority is the part of your body that makes reliable decisions, which is rarely the mind. The main authorities are emotional, sacral and splenic, with rarer ones for some Projectors, Manifestors and all Reflectors. Your chart, calculated from your date, time and place of birth, shows which one is yours.

Each of us has a more reliable place to decide from. It is called your authority, and it works together with the strategy of your type.

What is authority in Human Design?

Your authority is your inner decision-maker. It depends on which centres are defined in your chart, that is, which of the nine energy centres are coloured in and work consistently in you. The defined centres form a kind of order of precedence: if your emotional centre, the solar plexus, is defined, that is your authority, whatever else is in the chart. If it isn’t, the next in line is the sacral, then the spleen, and so on.

The idea behind it is simple. Your mind can see every side of a question, which is exactly why it can argue for anything. Your body knows something more direct. Human Design doesn’t ask you to stop thinking. It asks you to let the mind research, compare and explain, and then hand the final yes or no to your authority.

What is the difference between strategy and authority?

Your strategy tells you how opportunities should reach you: by responding, by being invited, by informing, by waiting. It comes from your type, so everyone of the same type shares it. Your authority tells you whether a given opportunity is right. It comes from your own chart, so two people of the same type can have different ones.

Here are the strategies in brief:

  • Generators: wait to respond. Let life bring something to you, then notice whether your body lights up.

  • Manifesting Generators: wait to respond, and then inform the people your action will affect.

  • Projectors: wait for the invitation, especially for the big things such as work, love and where to live.

  • Manifestors: inform before you act. You can start things, and telling people first clears the way.

  • Reflectors: wait a lunar cycle, about twenty-eight days, before important decisions.

A Projector with emotional authority waits for the invitation and then takes a few days before saying yes. A Generator with sacral authority waits for something to respond to and trusts the first sound.

Emotional authority: give it time

It is the most common authority of all. If this is you, your feelings move in waves, up and down, and a decision made at the top of the wave looks very different at the bottom. Your rule is simple and hard: never decide on the spot. Sleep on it, more than once if it matters. When you feel the same calm “yes” on a good day and on a flat day, you have your answer.

In everyday life this looks like a house you fall in love with on Saturday and feel lukewarm about on Tuesday. Or a job offer that frightens you on the evening it arrives and, three days later, feels quietly right. Neither feeling is false. Each is one point on the wave, and clarity comes from having seen the whole of it.

The practical answer is to buy yourself time. “Let me sleep on it” and “I’ll come back to you on Friday” are your best friends. People with emotional authority who learn to say them often find that the pressure to answer immediately was mostly coming from the other person.

Sacral authority: the gut response

This belongs to Generators and Manifesting Generators. The answer comes from the belly, in the moment, as a sound more than a sentence: a rising “mm-hm” or a flat “uh-uh”. It responds best to yes-or-no questions. Ask “what do you want to do this weekend?” and you’ll get a blank. Ask “do you want to go to the sea?” and the body answers before the head has caught up.

This is mine. I’m a Generator, and when I was deciding whether to make readings my main work, a friend asked me straight out. What came out of me was “yes, absolutely” before I had thought of a single reason. That is what a sacral yes sounds like.

The sacral works in the present. It doesn’t know about next year, only about whether there is energy for this, now. That makes it wonderful for daily choices and surprisingly good for big ones, as long as the question is put clearly. If you live alone, you can ask yourself out loud. Many people find a friend is better: someone who will ask simple questions and not argue with the answer.

Splenic authority: the quiet first instinct

A soft, instant knowing that speaks once and doesn’t repeat itself. It is concerned with what is healthy and safe for you right now. People with this authority often say, afterwards, “I knew the moment I walked in.” The work is learning to trust something that quiet when the mind is shouting.

The spleen speaks in the moment, so its message can be easy to miss: a slight unease about a person, a sudden sense that you should leave now, a small pull towards one road rather than another. It doesn’t explain itself. If you wait for a reason, the mind will happily supply one, and it may be the wrong one. Splenic authority is found mainly in Projectors and Manifestors.

What are the rarer authorities?

  • Ego authority: the question is “do I really want this, and do I have the will for it?” Promises matter a great deal here. It is found in some Manifestors and Projectors.

  • Self-projected authority: you hear your truth when you talk it through aloud with someone who only listens. This belongs to some Projectors. The listener isn’t there to advise, only to be a sounding board.

  • No inner authority: some Projectors, and all Reflectors, decide best by talking with several trusted people and noticing how they feel in different places over time. For Reflectors this is the lunar authority: letting a big decision ripen through a whole cycle of the Moon.

If you have one of these, you may have spent years being told to “trust your gut” and wondering why it never answered. That isn’t a fault in you. You were simply built to decide another way.

How do I know if I’m deciding from my mind?

A few signs give it away. You keep going round the same arguments. You make lists that come out even. You ask one more person, then another. You feel you should want something, but you don’t feel anything in particular. And afterwards, if it goes badly, you can explain perfectly why you chose it.

Each type also has a feeling that tells you when you’ve been deciding against your design. Human Design calls it the not-self theme: frustration for Generators, frustration and anger for Manifesting Generators, bitterness for Projectors, anger for Manifestors and disappointment for Reflectors. If one of those feelings has become a habit, it is worth looking at how you’ve been making your choices.

Try it this week

Pick a small decision, one that doesn’t matter much. Ask a friend to put it to you as a yes-or-no question, or give yourself two nights before answering, or notice your very first instinct. Choose the one that sounds like you and see what happens.

A few small experiments will tell you more than any amount of reading. Notice how the decision feels afterwards, not only how it turns out. Human Design is something you test in your own life, and small, low-stakes choices are the best place to start. When it comes to bigger questions, such as the work you’re made for, you’ll already know what your authority sounds like.

Strategy and authority in the other systems

Human Design is one of the four systems I read, and the others often confirm what it says. In astrology, the Moon describes your emotional reactions, as I explain in the article on your Sun, Moon and rising sign. When a chart with emotional authority also has a sensitive, slow-moving Moon, two systems are describing the same need for time, and I trust it more.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my Human Design authority?

You need your chart, calculated from your date, time and place of birth. The authority is named on most charts, next to your type and profile. Because it depends on the exact time, an accurate birth time matters.

Can my authority change during my life?

No. Your authority comes from your chart, which is fixed at birth. What changes is how well you hear it, and that usually improves with practice.

What if my mind and my authority disagree?

Human Design suggests letting the authority have the final word, especially for decisions that affect your own life. The mind is still useful: it gathers information and helps you explain the choice to others afterwards.

Do children have an authority too?

Yes, everyone does. Knowing a child’s authority can change how you ask them questions: a sacral child answers best to simple yes-or-no questions, and an emotional child needs time before being asked to commit.

Is emotional authority the same as being emotional?

Not at all. It describes how clarity comes to you, through time and the movement of your feelings, not how much you show them. Some very calm, private people have emotional authority.

Would you like to know how you’re built to decide?

Your type, strategy and authority are all in the free summary reading, next to your astrology, your Ba Zi and your numbers. It is around 8 pages, by email.

If you’d like to talk through a decision you’re facing with your whole chart in front of us, the personal reading includes a call of about 90 minutes.
